"With the best rooftop views in North Africa... This is the country’s first and foremost mountain retreat..." Condé Nast Traveller. The high Atlas Mountains, so important to Marrakech, can often be seen awaits from the city and the views are magnificent. However, a whole new experience awaits those who venture into them. Treat yourself to a trip to the Atlas and visit the home of the Berbers, the original inhabitants of North Africa. The tranquillity of Berber village life provides the perfect contrast to the hubbub of the city. The area we visit is beyond the main road system. From the village if Imlil, footpaths and mule tracks mount through lush, irrigated terraces, apple orchards and walnut groves to other villages where the way of life has changed little for centuries and traditional values and hospitality are unaffected by the outside world. Your visit will be based at the Kasbah du Toubkal between Imlil and Aremd in the Toubkal National Park. The Kasbah is perched on a great rock outcrop above the main village with panoramic views of the mountains, valleys and waterfalls. It is reached by a short walk (15 mn) or mule ride from the village of Imlil. Imlil, 65 km from Marakech in the Ait Mizane Valley, is the starting point for the trek up Jbel Toubkal (4165 m) the highest mountain in North Africa. Travel beyond is by mule or on foot. So impressive is the scenery that film director Martin Scorsese chose Imlil as one of the locations for Kundun, his film about the Dalai Lama, temporarily transforming the Kasbah into a Tibetan monastery. This area was formerly the preserve of the mountaineer or the intrepid traveller. Now the Kasbah du Toubkal provides, for the first time, a base where the discerning visitor can eat or stay without the hardship historically associated with visits to this spectacular region.
This former summer residence of Glaoui Caid (local chief) was recently restored by local craftsmen. The restoration and operation of the Kasbah involves and has the backing of the local community. The British company owner of Kasbah du Toubkal, have won the “Green Globe Award for Sustainable Tourism” in Imlil. | Kasbah du Toubkal at a Glance | Sleeps: 22 Accommodation: 5 Standard Double/Twin bedrooms 2 Deluxe double/twin: Amadin & Hadou 2 Deluxe double/twin with unique aspect: Immouzer & Tikha Linen 1 Junior suite: Tasghart 1 Garden apartment Suite: Ifri Facilities/description: Conference facilities for 100, equipped with multimedia surround sound projection equipment.
